Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

In today's society, teachers are no longer expected to instill a love of reading in their students, rather they are asked to prepare them for standardized testing. I truly feel that this is present in my classroom. These students have been taught test taking strategies backward and forward, and have learned how to read books and answer comprehension questions. However, when asked if they like to read, very few students answer yes. While our students have become proficient test takers, they do not hold in them a love of reading. As I work at a school that is in a neighborhood where money is not ample and parents do not speak English, school is the only place where this love of learning can be instilled. I am therefore not only asking for novels that will help my students to grasp the beautiful world that literature can take you to, but also magazines and books that will connect my students to history and current events that effect the way in which we live. I feel that if we want students to become productive members of society, they are never too young to learn of the affect they can have. I am asking that my students be provided with the same opportunities as those with parents that are present and families that are involved. I truly believe that if my students can leave my classroom with a love of reading, they will lead better lives. Most of my students do not have books at home, and none of them subscribe to the newspaper. Very few have parents at home that have the ability or the time to take them to the library, or to have discussions about the news. By donating to this cause, you will help to make a difference in these children's lives by offering them an opportunity to become part of a future that we will be proud of.
