Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach in a low income, predominately Hispanic neighborhood public school on the North side of Chicago. My current grade level is preschool age children who are classified as bilingual and English as a second language learner. My students are different types of learners and constantly learning learning about their world. They love to learn about new topics in the world around them.
Because they live in a low income neighborhood, my students often do not have access to resources needed to enhance and support their learning.
Families and students in the community often have to relay on the school for be provided with support and access to these resources. As a teacher, I try to provide as many resources, both inside the school and outside the school, and try to be flexible with their times and abilities. Using what parents and I know, we work as a community to provide a great learning experience.
My Project
As you may have seen, the materials being asked for are mainly books. These books are either Spanish or bilingual books. Most of my students' native language is Spanish. Currently in our classroom library, we have very few books that are in the Spanish language. As part of our school to home connection, I allow students to borrow a book from the library to read at home, but since we have very few books in the Spanish language, our parents have a difficult time reading the English language books with their child.
However with your support and the use of these materials, I will have a better selection for my students to enjoying reading with their families.
I am confident that having a variety of books will help each and every child find an interest in reading and become life long readers and learners. Not only will it help them become life long readers, it will improve their fluency in both languages and provide new vocabulary words to enrich their understanding of the world around them.
