My urban students are curious, resilient, and appreciative.
My urban middle school students are very diverse in their culture, income, and learning styles.
My school has over 70% free and reduced price lunch and over 20% of students are English Language Learners. We even have a few homeless students. Since these students do not always have the means to buy or access books, they really rely on the school to provide classroom libraries. My students need access to book series so that they can read more than one book from an author that they love as many of them do not have the resources to go out and buy a book if they find something that they like.
We also have many voracious readers who would love to take advantage of some new books. We have a Pre-AP program and these students are always asking if I have any new series to borrow.
There are many little ways to enlarge your child’s world. Love of books is the best of all. –Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis. A love of reading is more than a hobby, it's a real academic advantage. We need more high interest novels that will enrich our students educational experiences and encourage students to love to read.
Nothing hooks a reluctant middle school reader like a great series and I want to make sure that my students have access to highly engaging series to foster a love of reading.
All of the requested series come directly and highly recommended from my students who love to read and they have promised to help promote the new books if we are lucky enough to receive them.
Studies show that students who read more do better in school. If my students have access to new, popular book series, they will be more likely to read more and increase their comprehension, analysis, and higher order thinking skills. I hope to enrich my students' academic and personal lives by introducing them to not only one book that they may love but a whole series of them so they can continue to develop a relationship with a book, character or author that they love thus instilling a lifelong love of reading.
