I am a teacher at Swift Elementary School in Chicago. Our neighborhood is extremely culturally and linguistically diverse. Many students at Swift are learning English as a second language and speak a variety of different languages. I believe reading for deeper meaning is valuable for all students and peer-led discussions are valuable to learning. My goal is to help my students to be able to think independently and critically by engaging them in meaningful and authentic literacy activities such as student book clubs.
I hope to receive a donation of a videotape recorder so that I can videotape student book club discussions and replay them to students, allowing them to reflect on their individual, group, and peer discussions. Students will grow as readers, thinkers, and writers by observing other groups and identifying strengths they can apply to their own discussions.
I want students to experience literacy in a way that deepens their understanding and encourages self-reflective thinking. Due to the large number of language learners, having a way to play back book club discussions will really broaden their understandings. Sometimes, language learners need to have sentences repeated in order to process the meaning effectively. While other times, they may need someone to clarify meaning/vocabulary being used in the discussion.
I want to meet the needs of all of my students in a way that leads them to life-long literacy, higher-order and critical thinking, and successful engagement through use of technology. By videotaping book club discussions, students will broaden their understanding of reading processes. Please help me foster a love of reading by donating a videotape recorder so that I can further my students?learning in literacy.
