it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Hello, I am a fifth and sixth grade inclusion teacher at a highly disadvantaged public school in the Bronx. 100% of my students receive free lunches and 93% of the other students in my school do as well. My students love to read, but our classroom library contains a very limited supply of books, and even fewer that would be suitable for literature discussion groups. I would like to set up centers for my students using restaurants as the model for the discussion groups. Students will go to their restaurant area of the room with their book in hand and discuss the reading. Groups will preview the book (the appetizers), discuss the content (main course) and reflect on what they learned from the book (the dessert course).
I want to provide my students a classroom setting that is inviting and exciting and will draw them into a love for reading. When students see the front covers of the books available to them in the Library/Centers Pockets it creates a curiosity, enthusiasm and desire to read. The Library/Centers Pockets Chart will house the classroom books that students will be choosing for their daily reading and will display the cover of each book. The Classroom Management Pocket Chart will indicate to each student whom they will be dining with to discuss the book. The Classroom Management Pocket Chart will be titled "Today I will read with..." The pockets provide a space for sentence strips labeled with each students name. The teacher will then add the names of the students under the correct daily grouping. This will provide time for the teacher to work with individual students or small groups as needed.
I want my students to form a life time love of reading and I want to provide a welcoming reading environment each day. I think that my Reading Restaurant and Literature Stations will set the mood for enthusiastic reading. I will also be able to use this center for years to come.
