Help me give my students the final supplies we need to complete my 5th grader's Yayoi Kusuma project. The tee shirts are the final piece were they can showcase their design work.
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
I am the school art teacher a small, neighborhood school in Richmond, Virginia. We have a diverse group of learners at our school, but they are all eager to learn more and explore different possibilities with art. The students come from high-poverty, urban homes. Many of their families struggle financially, so often the students are burdened with problems beyond their years. It is my hope to provide the students a safe place where they are able to not only learn and develop their creativity, but also provide a sometimes much needed escape from the day to day.
My Project
My students had to do a short biography on a chosen artist last semester, and one of my students really got into his chosen artist, Yayoi Kusama. He was so excited about some of her camouflaged works, and kept sharing with his classmates, that quite a few students asked to learn more about her, and to create a project in her style.
My kids have works so hard to come up with meaningful designs, and are now excitedly beginning to build their backgrounds, but they truly can not wait to get working on the tee shirts granted from this donation.
The final step is for the students to recreate their original design onto their tee shirts using the sharpies and paints. We will complete the project by taking color photos of all the students to display their creations.
