My students need interactive workspaces, such as a horseshoe table and whiteboard table, where they can collaborate more effectively and have choice as to where they work.
Working with 10 year olds might be the most rewarding experience I've ever had. 10 year olds embody curiosity and fun. The fifth graders that I work with have a natural desire to learn about the world around them. Because we are one of only a few fifth grade classes in a middle school setting in our district, I get the benefit of watching my students grow into passionate young adults who have a desire to keep learning and growing.
My students thrive on deeper learning.
Teaching them how to ask questions that quench their thirst for more has been such a rewarding feat. Because I teach both math and science, I am able to deliver a great deal of relevance to our daily instruction that allows them to consider future career paths as well as innovations that interest them.
My Project
Sitting in desks all day not only dulls the bottom; it dulls the mind. I want my students to have spaces to work away from their traditional workspaces. Creativity, collaboration, critical thinking and communication are the foundations of a successful workplace. I want my classroom to run in a way that teaches students how to interact appropriately so they are successful in their future work lives.
By adding a few new seating options, I hope to emulate more authentic workspaces.
The Horseshoe table will allow me to pull small groups and have a dedicated spot for targeted interactions with students. The whiteboard table will provide students with a space to collaborate, in a fun way, on their math and science tasks. The stools will allow students to move around the room and arrange themselves in various ways as they work independently on certain tasks.
Giving students ownership over how and where they work will empower them to make other choices throughout their academic career. Movement is always good for learning!
