My first grade class is made up of 20 first graders who are all English language learners and come in each day eager to learn. Many of the students are children of immigrant parents who do not speak English and are able to provide them with limited academic support. Many of the students come from low income backgrounds which make it difficult for families to contribute to the cost of purchasing resources and books for the classroom. My desire is to provide my students with the tools and resources they need in the classroom to further enhance their learning.
My Project
Quality STEM learning is becoming increasingly important for our young students in order to build a foundation to boost student interest, and inspire future learning. These resources will allow my students to be innovative problem solvers. Students will learn how to work together to engineer and solve real life problems. For example, Marble run and K'nex Kits will teach students how to identify a problem, work together to solve and come up with a solution.
Not only is this new STEM focus necessary, it is both engaging and fun for our young learners.
With these resources, it will allow my students to apply different STEM concepts while using their creativity, problem solving skills, and imagination. Simple machines, ZOOB builders, and other STEM materials will be a welcomed addition to the classroom. This will be a wonderful addition to our classroom as students will gain skills that will help them develop, explore and find creative ways to problem solve. I am also requesting engineering books to inspire students to problem solve in a creative manner.
Giving students a way to learn in a hands-on, creative, inquiry based environment gives them the opportunity to be and feel successful. STEM education creates critical thinkers, increases science/math literacy, and enables the next generation of innovators. It is clear that most jobs of the future will require a basic understanding of math and science. STEM education promotes 21st century learning.
