My students need math materials such as ten frames, a Hands-on Counting Grid, a Hands-on Counting Tray and much more for their independent work time while I pull small groups.
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
Our school is a Title One School in Prince George's County, MD. Our kindergarten class is a mix of five and six year old kids who have been in school before and some first-time students who are learning how to maneuver their way through the school day. Students enter the year with a large range of skills. Kindergarten is a rewarding age to teach because there is such a great amount of growth from the beginning of the year to the end.
My Project
I'm requesting math center items from Lakeshore that combine fun with number sense development. Right now, I have students in large math groups during our center time, but this year, I'd like for them to be able to have more choice in what they do and that means more materials!
Last year, I found that my class came into kindergarten struggling with basic number recognition and 1:1 counting skills, so the number locks, counting trays and ten frame stamping sets will give them an opportunity to practice counting.
As they get better, the one hundred match chart is a natural next step for their counting skills. All of these products can then be adapted for use during our addition and subtraction units.
