Due to the nature of being an English teacher, my lessons throughout the year often include a focus novel that my classes will read during class time. Reading, whether it is 'popcorn reading,' silent reading, or listening to an audible, can become monotonous, day in and day out. With so many diverse learners in my classes, it can be tough to come up with different strategies to keep their attention and keep them engaged in the lesson; this is where crafting comes in.
When students are creating something, such as a macrame bracelet, wall hanging, or a paracord keychain, they have the ability to pay attention to the content being delivered, as well as a better retention rate.
The physical activity these students do as they craft helps students work on their fine motor skills while also improving their memory retention. Physical activity in the classroom improves students' focus, retention, memory consolidation, creativity and mood.
In addition to helping students stay engaged in the lesson, creating these crafts will also help build community in the classroom. At the beginning of the semester, I will teach my classes how to do various knots that can be used for crafting, as well as the expectations and guidelines for crafting during class time. During this introductory period, students would build relationships with one another, working on different projects together and creating a classroom community.
