Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are English Language Learners (ELLs) from kindergarten to 5th grade. I teach at a Title 1 school in the Lower East Side in a large city in New York, and all of our students qualify for free or reduced price school lunch.
Research suggests that ELLs benefit from various modifications including explicit vocabulary instruction, visual aids, graphic organizers, and step-by-step teaching.
My students are enthusiastic about improving their oral language and literacy skills in English, and they eagerly trying to use the tools and strategies that we provide. I am always looking for new ways to make the reading and writing curriculum more accessible for students who are learning another language.
More than half of my students also have speech and language disorders or other learning disabilities, and, therefore, receive special education services of some kind. Our school's special education teachers, speech providers, and English as a New Language staff all collaborate to more effectively support student achievement.
My Project
One way that students can celebrate their own growth as writers is by publishing their writing pieces at the end of every unit; I want to give students the chance to include colorful images and text features in their finished work.
Your donation of colored ink for our printer would help my students publish their typed essays and short stories in color.
As a teacher of English Language Learners and students with special needs, I am always looking for ways to build engagement among more reluctant writers. Giving students the chance to publish in color would also give students a long-term goal to look forward to.
Another way that having ink for our color printer would be helpful in my classroom is for creating writing tools, student-friendly charts, personal dictionaries and more, all of which can improve students' writing skills and independence.
