Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
As Billy Joel says, "... music in itself is healing. It's an explosive expression of humanity."
My students learn to make harmonies through music in my classroom and how to live harmoniously within the rest of their lives.
My students attend a Title I, bilingual elementary school.
I teach all students in kindergarten through fifth grade at my school, and my students love singing, dancing, and making music with our classroom instruments.
In my classroom, they learn to read, play, and create music. We also incorporate other subjects, such as poetry, science, math, and art, into the classroom regularly.
My students have so much enthusiasm for the fine arts programs at our school. Most of them are English language learners, and they use music to further practice English reading and speaking. They also love playing instruments with the class. They truly create beautiful pieces of music when working together.
My Project
I have requested an alto xylophone and a bass metallophone for several reasons. Our school does not own a bass metallophone, and anyone who has heard the haunting sound of the low metal tones can say that the metallophone adds so much to a performance.
A bass metallophone, when played in a group ensemble, has the important role of securing the beat and playing rich harmonic notes that contrast with the melody. I know that my students would love hearing and playing this instrument if given the chance!
The alto xylophone is an important staple in the music classroom, too. The alto xylophone can play many different parts in an Orff ensemble, and my students will think this instrument is our perfect "Goldilocks" instrument - not too high, and not too low.
Playing these instruments in a group ensemble will help my students learn musicianship through performance and help them understand that each part of the music, not just the melody, is beautiful and important.
My students are very important to me, and I want to give them every musical opportunity that I can.
Adding these instruments to our classroom would not only allow more students to play an instrument at a time, but help them understand and verbalize the beauty of multi-part music and the depth of musical tone.
They, and I, would be so grateful to have an alto xylophone and a bass metallophone to use in our classroom and our performances.
