My students come from diverse backgrounds and attend school year-round in the heart of the East End of Charleston. We are a Title I school, meaning the majority of our students come from low socioeconomic backgrounds. Our teachers, staff, and members of the community work hard to provide our students with valuable relationships to help them achieve their goals. For many of my students, school is their safe-haven. Many of these students do not have access to books at home. During our small group times, I am trying to find books that I think they will respond to and love, so that they can begin to enjoy reading!
Do you remember your favorite book as a child?
I am hoping to introduce interesting and exciting books to these children through literature circles during small groups. My school no longer has a library, so I am trying to create my own intervention library of chapter books that I can use with my students. I am choosing books that I think students might look back on and remember as their favorite book when they are all grown up.
My Project
My reading intervention students currently use intervention workbooks during small group times. They do not enjoy the short stories in these books. With these chapter books, they can read novels like their higher-performing classmates. Also, by choosing books like Harry Potter and The Westing Game that will interest my students, they will be more engaged and will hopefully be more interested in reading and possibly even enjoy it in the future!
These books will be read and discussed as a group, with fun and interesting culminating activities being completed when we are finished reading the book.
I plan on reusing these books each year with different grade levels of students.
