Creating Future Scientists Through Non-Fiction Texts
My students need non-fiction science texts to supplement our outdated textbooks and limited school library, as well as science games to foster a love of science!
"Curiosity is the wick in the candle of learning," William Arthur Ward once said. Curiosity abounds in my second grade class, and I want to keep the momentum going! Unfortunately, our school library does not have an abundance of age appropriate non-fiction texts for our primary students to read.
I teach a class of wonderful second grade students at a Title I school.
Our school has over 85% of our students on free/reduced lunch. The major demographics of our students are Hispanic, African American, and Asian. Many of our students live in apartments or government housing. We also have a large English as a second language population. This year I am lucky to have a large group of gifted and talented students in my class!
My students need non-fiction science texts to supplement our outdated textbooks and limited school library, as well as science games to foster a love of science! My students will be immersed in content specific literature to help better understand our science concepts, allow students to conduct more thorough research and investigations, help students continue to read and reflect on non-fiction texts and their text features, and keep the love of reading and learning growing. My students will also use the games and file folder readings to help bring non-fiction text to life in the reading and science classroom.
Students love to ask questions, and non-fiction texts help these students to find the answers.
I want my students to keep on asking those questions and continue to search to find the answers. With several of my students being gifted and talented this year, many of these students will be conducting research. We will need many resource materials to be readily available at their fingertips..
