Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I am in my fourth year of teaching, and am working in south Los Angeles. I was hired to teach music as well as remedial reading. Our school has the hope of establishing a school orchestra to perform in the community and give our students an outlet they would not normally have. In a time when our students are heavily influenced by hip-hop and rap music, I have taken on the task of introducing my students to jazz, with the hope that being introduced to this new genre of music would serve as the foundation of development for some of the next great jazz musicians. Our school's orchestra is comprised of three instruments: flute, clarinet and saxophone. The students who wanted to participate had to have parental permission and support, especially since they had to buy their own instruments. Because of this stipulation,some students were immediately eliminated because they did not have the necessary means. It pained me to think of the next Miles Davis, or John Coltrane being denied the chance to perfect his craft due to the fact that his/her parents could not afford it financially. Since I was hired to teach brass instrument instruction we have added trumpets to our orchestra. Our need comes from wanting to have instruments for the students who cannot afford them. We are in need of percussion instruments, as well as brass and woodwind instruments. Any contributions would be greatly appreciated.
