Help me give my students supplies such as the solar kits and electronics building kits so they will have opportunities to experience design and materials for creating and problem solving.
My students come from 5 feeder elementary schools with differing levels of previous science instruction. I want them to LEARN science, DEVELOP their creativity, and BECOME problem solvers and inventors in the future. I strive to help my students learn and develop skills that will advance them in future jobs and as citizens.
We are mainly a rural community with few job opportunities within our county and a lower tax base to support education.
Many of our citizens must travel to a larger nearby town for employment. Our students MUST empower themselves with skills in technology, STEM-related work, and leadership in the service industries. My project is to provide materials and activities that foster student excitement and challenge them in science learning and application. I'm enthusiastic to guide them, and I love to hear these words, "Oh! I get it! I know how to solve this need."
My Project
I would love to provide materials that my students can use to design and create machines. The kits chosen are interesting to middle school students and, therefore, will motivate my students to actively participate.
I want my students to understand how solar power, machine design, and technological devices are increasingly becoming more important to the quality of their daily lives.
By designing and building these projects, students will internalize how machinery works and how to repair/ redesign devices that aren't working efficiently. An additional benefit in working in teams on these activities will be that students learn to collaborate with "co-workers" in a productive way.
