My Students

My students are risk-takers and revolutionaries! Each one of them made the choice to take Humanities in a project-based learning environment. This concept has not been tried in our small-town Texas school where over 60% of our students receive free-and-reduced lunch and face poverty issues at home.

My students are big thinkers!

They enjoy learning in an environment which values autonomy, student choice, ownership, and voice. My students control their own destinies, and their future looks bright! My 9th and 10th-grade students have a deep desire to learn and to become lifelong learners. Despite their small town roots, I believe in their big dreams and aspirations.

My Project

A Long Walk to Water will guide students through the analysis and evaluation of African people, struggles, and history. My students don't currently have options for current and timely, young adult literature. Student understanding is deepened when content areas are connected, and learning has value.

My students need literature that reinforces concepts in World History and Human Geography.

A Long Walk to Water begins as two stories, told in alternating sections, about a girl in Sudan in 2008 and a boy in Sudan in 1985. The Water for Sudan program is a platform in the book that gives students an opportunity to explore their own philanthropic feelings and apply that in community service activities.
