My students need a 3D printer and filaments so that they can learn to code as well as how to make mistakes while staying positive and overcoming obstacles.
I am currently in my first year at a new school. This is my seventh year of teaching. My students come from a low socio-economic background and there is an extremely high number of students who receive free or reduced price lunch. My school is a Title One school.
My students love to learn and they are very curious learners.
Our school is unique because we have Project Lead the Way. Each week my students go to our PLTW teacher for an hour and get hands-on experiences with engineering practices ranging from ramps, to Lego's, to coding and so much more. My students may not get these experiences anywhere but at school so I would like to provide them with unique and engaging experiences that they won't forget as well as giving them skills that can potentially set them apart from others down the road.
My Project
The students at my school have a unique opportunity each week to experience engineering practices in Project Lead the Way. Outside of that class, the opportunities are limited for my students to have these experiences that could potentially set them apart in the years to come. Getting a Flashforge 3D printer and filaments would give my students the rare opportunity to be immersed in a world of engineering from coding to creating and then fine-tuning the finished product.
Besides using the printer solely as an engineering tool, it would give my students the opportunity to build physical models across all subject areas.
In math, the students could build accurate geometric shapes. In ELA, the students would be able to build detailed models to represent their writing. In science, they could build animals, ramps for forces and motion, and in social studies, they could build parts of communities or even Native American artifacts.
