Creating Empathy Through Children's Literature

My students need books and art supplies to create empathetic understanding.

My Students

My students enjoy group projects, art, reading, and a challenge. I want to integrate literature and history into my classroom to teach empathy skills so students will become more understanding when interacting with others.

My goal is to engender empathy by creating a deeper understanding of the experiences of others using oral histories, medical reports, and children's literature from WWII Japan during the war and bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki.

I have 48 students in health science classes who love to learn and create. They are focused and driven which isn't necessarily the case with all high school students. We have over 1,800 students at our suburban, public school located on the Gulf Coast of Mississippi. Many of our students are eligible for free and reduced lunches and fee waivers.

My Project

This is an important issue for me personally because I believe empathy for others is on the decline in America which is being demonstrated nationally, in communities, and classrooms. My students plan to become healthcare providers after college. I often formulate lessons to teach them about empathy which I believe can be developed in others.

This project will familiarize my students with the experiences of children who suffered the nuclear bombings at Hiroshima and Nagasaki, engender empathy for their suffering, and promote a desire to prevent nuclear weapons from being used as a mechanism of war in the future.

I will teach about the hibakusha (atomic bomb survivors) with the goal that my students will become empathetic, active citizens who will express their opinions with knowledge and forethought.

The medical horrors and uncertainty faced by the hibakusha and their families engender within me empathy and a desire to help. I will use Yoko's Diary, Sachiko, Running with Cosmos Flowers, and Sadako and the Thousand Paper Cranes to encourage students to look beyond the headlines and create collages on canvas to represent the rest of the individual's story.
