Help me give my students support with their social-emotional learning. Like most special education teachers, I have not been provided a curriculum and am expected to buy or create my own.
My class is a self-contained special education class in Arizona. Students in my program often struggles to maintain school appropriate behaviors. We have regular social emotional lessons where we discuss real-life problems that we can face on a daily basis at school. For some that means having our class of supports as they try to work through trauma they recently faced. While other students initiate discussions about how to respond in a frustrating situation on the playground in a way that “wont make other kids scared” of them.
Each of my students take great pride when they are able to use appropriate coping strategies when they are upset.
My Project
The Educator Guide provides a solid foundation for the creation of our Social-Emotional Curriculum. The books in the "A Little Spot of" series help my students learn in a fun and easy to understand way while also showing my students the importance of books. The "180 Days of Social Emotional Learning" Workbooks allow students to take what they are learning home with them and continue using those strategies with their families.
My students greatly enjoy learning in the general education classroom with their peers but are worried that they won't be able to manage their emotions and do something they regret or become embarrassed by.
These resources will help my students learn different strategies and tools that they can use to manage their emotions when with their peers in an appropriate way.
