Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
What makes my students special? Everything about them is special! My students enter the classroom every morning looking forward to learning something new. Their interests vary from science to sports to super heroes. But they especially enjoy playing games that require critical thinking.
My students' circumstances do not define them!
We are an urban school that serve students whose parents have immigrated from countries that range from Eastern Europe to South America. As diverse as our student population is, our parents all share the same hopes, dreams and aspirations for their children- to become productive members of society.
My Project
I have requested 5 chess boards and 10 beginning chess books to start a chess club for my second graders. My second graders have demonstrated an interest in playing games and solving puzzles that require higher order thinking.
So, what better way to foster critical thinking than by learning to play chess?
Giving my students an additional avenue for developing their critical thinking and problem solving skills by learning to play chess will be a welcome educational tool in our classroom. Critical thinking and problem solving are skills that will allow my students to succeed in school, and later in life.
