Creating Craftier Engineers Through STEAM Education and Jewelry Design!
Help me give my students the crafting tools and materials necessary to focus on the five elements of STEAM (science, technology, engineering, arts and math) education through designing and prototyping hand-prepared jewelry!
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
We teach in a rural area where over half of our students come from low-income families. They are very hungry for new skills, thirsty for knowledge.
They love the project-based problem solving activities that this program offers because of the hands-on nature of the activities; we, the teachers, love the connections made to science, technology, engineering, art and mathematics!!
Today's world demands for creative problem-solvers, craftier engineers. Our students are fearless when it comes to new experiences in these areas, and as children of the 21st Century, they need to be provided with just these STEAM-based opportunities. We can prepare them to use a variety of tools to engage their world for a stronger tomorrow.
My Project
The majority of our students arrive to us from low-income, very much struggling, families and cannot afford to get involved in such a beautiful experience. We want to provide the opportunity for our kiddos to grow in a positive, confident, self-motivated way. Jewelry making can become so much more than a hobby for many students; it has the potential to become a craft for livelihood. Teaching our students to work with their hands is a skill that can be transcended well beyond jewelry making and even onto entrepreneurship.
Using their imaginations, students create an idea, prototype it, test it, receive feedback from peers, revise it and develop a final design for it, taking notes in a journal along the way.
Our STEAM-based curriculum will provide our students the technical skills, scientific and practical mathematical knowledge, and engineering necessary for learning the parameters associated with an artistic craft.
STEAM education inspires people to wonder, ask questions and innovate by developing their engineering and design skills through prototyping and inventing. People who develop a maker mindset will be better equipped for future challenges. The skills acquired through making allow them to think analytically and to solve real world problems in innovative and creative ways. This opportunity provides students a creative outlet to build a sense of accomplishment and empowerment.
It is critical in today’s ever-changing world for people to become more than consumers of their world and to develop their skills through the design and engineering process in order to be producers and problem-solvers. Business and industry continue to broadcast that future-ready employees need to have multiple areas of expertise or at least appreciate how a range of skills fit together; and for our students, we have STEAM education to fill those gaps.
