I am a school counselor on an airforce base that serves 750 students from preK-sixth grade. I want to creative a space of comfort and flexibility during counseling sessions. Next year our campus will be expanding to Middle School that will increase the need of a comfortable space that can service PreK-8.
Most of the students have one or both parents serving in the military.
Some have one or both parents deployed. I feel it necessary to create a safe and comfortable enviroment for my students to come to groups and individual counseling.
My Project
My students need counseling games, activities, calming tools and comfortable seating that provides a counseling space where they feel safe and comfortable. The flexible seating cushions will allow me to move groups around on the floor for activities or to have a calming corner for students to quietly read and regain their emotional balence.
I would also like to add a tablet so students could utilize some online counseling resource such as relaxing music, guided relaxation stories, and downloaded Chill Drills.
For students that are kinesthetic learners, the play dough and legos allow them to calm down through hands on play so they can quickly get back to the classroom. Currently, my room has nine florescent lights which makes the space too bright. I would like to add light covers so the space feels more natural which will add comfort to the space. By adding simple but useful tools to the room will enhance the enviroment for the students and help them feel comfortable in there space.
