This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
Energetic, trendy, and seeking to be world changers is how I describe the students at this Middle Magnet school. Though an urban school serving approximately 500 students in which 93% of its population lives below poverty level and 30% speak a second language, the students are striving to compete and maintain in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) competitions. Driven by their love of technology, humor, cooking and sports these middle school students seek to explore various avenues.
It is my hope that we can encourage students to become literate in the language of coding as they claim their right to create, connect and compute using STEM related tools that inspire them to enjoy the work of computer science.
STEM that students can explore and experience so much more to inquire and seek to learn. This grant will provide microbit STEM kits for students to use explore coding languages such as Python, giving them a Bit of a leg up in the world of STEM.
My Project
These materials will make a difference in students learning as it will increase their knowledge of coding in various computer programming languages, arming them with the skill set to understand how it works. Once students understand how it works they will be able to create those technologies opening opportunities for future success in a world built on creating and developing.
For example, students will program a cutebot to learn computational thinking and practices; engaging them in the work of sequences, loops, conditions, experimenting and iterating.
Learning the ‘how’ of computer science, eventually students will create their own projects, bit by bit as they engage further in the art of computer programming.
