My students are young, energetic, and caring. Many of them make cards for ill staff members without any prompting and are quick to ask you how your day is going. From meeting their parents and siblings, I see that this desire to comfort those is deeply rooted in family. Over the first few months of school, I begin feeling like a part of their families as we get to know one another. This sense of community needs to be fostered through improved materials and spaces.
I love my students for their diversity and independence.
They come from diverse cultures: African-American, Hmong, Mexican-American, Puerto Rican American, Swedish-American. They enjoy all kinds of different past times - K-Pop, Rap, Soccer, Football, Basketball. I love learning about my students and sharing their interests.
I encourage my students to move around the class at the appropriate times. They think best when their blood is flowing and are given chances to make smart choices. They circulate the room and visit each other with poised maturity. They know how to get to work and have fun at the same time. My students share their ideas and respect other people's ideas.
The student furniture of the old days is unfortunately the furniture that most schools are using. My classroom is filled with desks which have a seat with an attached writing surface. They are clunky, take up too much space, and are beginning to break. In order to have a more dynamic working and learning environment, my students need for various seating options that serve the specific purpose of the activity they are partaking in.
My students need an inspired workspace.
The four tables that I have chosen would allow a student to work singularly or for two classmates to join him/her to complete group work. These triangular tables take up less space, can be moved and rearranged easily, and give some of my bigger students room to fit at their workstation.
