My students need five drums for a drum circle unit that we will be doing in the spring.
This project expired on February 28, 2013.
Hooray! This project is fully funded
Have you ever worked on a team and accomplished something big? Drum circles create cultural awareness, self confidence, consideration of others, and pride from being involved in something bigger than yourself. Drumming will help my students positively affect the world around them.
My students attend a high-risk, high impoverished Title I school.
Despite many of their difficult, uncertain home lives, they come to school thirsty to learn, are incredibly intelligent and talented, and light up the hallways with their humor. They never fail to surprise me with their insightful thoughts about our learning and have a desire to play the drums! (It has been my most highly requested class!)
Many of the students are refugees that have witnessed terrible things and need an outlet for their feelings. My students desperately need to see that they are important and are valuable to others. Many times they are made to feel small and alone. Working as a team in a drum circle will help them see the value they bring to others and feel proud of what they accomplish during our performance.
With these five drums, we will spend time building their rhythmic and musical understanding and improving their hand-eye coordination, listening ability, and dexterity. All of those skills will help them in their classroom with learning English, reading and writing, as well as help them be more well-rounded as future citizens of the world.
Music is a subject that helps students think in a different way from their other learning.
For some, it is simply a creative outlet, for many it is a way to escape their troubles and serves as an outlet for their emotions, and it certainly makes well-rounded, sensitive, creative, bright, intelligent, independent, outside-the-box thinkers of all. Drumming is the BEST way to reach some of those "unreachable" students because it is engaging, fun, and connects us with the pulse of life.
