My students come to school eager to learn together. They come from many different backgrounds and cultures and bring with them a vast array of experiences and strengths.
The words we live by in our diverse, urban second grade classroom are, “The harder you work, the smarter you get!" Everyday you will see us setting goals and pursuing our hopes and dreams with focus.
Thanks for supporting the hard work of my 24 bright and bold learners!
At our K-8 performing arts magnet, more than half of our students are English language learners. We work hard every day to provide rigorous culturally relevant instruction that inspires achievement in and through the arts.
My Project
The morning message is a time for our class to think about upcoming lessons or to reflect on important learning from the day before. My students respond to the question of the day and fill in missing words and phrases in the message as they trickle in to school. Durning our morning meeting we review the message and all of the enthusiastic responses written by students. An easel will give our interactive message a place of honor and make it much easier for students to access.
This interactive routine builds a positive learning community and brings literacy alive!
In addition to the social-emotional aspect, students participate in a shared writing experience that is based on a predictable text; they practice letter and word recognition, learn new vocabulary, and build literacy skills. Once we have about two weeks of messages, we turn them into a big book. Students can go back and reread what was written earlier in the year. These collections of the morning message are beloved by all.
This easel is a sturdy piece of furniture that will not only help to highlight the morning message, but can function as a word work or math station for students during academic choice times. Please consider funding this project that will help to launch the day for my learners!
