Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Although my students come from socioeconomically disadvantaged households, and have experienced trauma in their lives, they continue to come to school ready to learn. Their resilience is astounding.
They are just as capable and kind as any other group of kids when given the right tools.
Because they come from an inner city, I think sometimes they are unjustly stereotyped as being rough, disrespectful, or unmotivated. Really though, they are just kids trying to do the best they can with what they are given.
In these hard times, where many of my families are struggling to manage their own jobs and now school at home, I'd like to do as much as I can to create community and take care of their social-emotional needs as much as possible.
My Project
All of these materials will be used to help create the feel of really being in the classroom. It will hopefully make their virtual learning into a little bit more of a hands-on environment and make it a little bit more engaging.
I am especially excited about the Lindsay Wildlife Virtual Experience where they will teach kids about Animal Adaptations and introduce them to animals for three weeks in a row.
Our virtual school day is so modified and often Science gets left behind and this is an engaging way to get some in.
I will send home the books with my students so we can all have a copy of what we are reading together. The books will be given to my students as gifts rather than expecting them to be returned at the end of the year. That way they can feel a sense of ownership and highlight and make notes in them as needed. Many of our students do not have access to books at home, so it would be nice for them start a mini library.
