Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Have you ever wondered what it would feel like to want to say something or do something and not be able to communicate that to anyone? Well, that is what my speech and language students face every day.
90% of the students attending my school live their lives below the poverty line.
Resources are limited. Real life experiences are also limited. The students with whom I work are speech and language impaired and receive special education services. Communication is often very difficult for them. Often times just being able to verbalize a simple need or desire is difficult for them to put into words. These students also need to have a greater visual awareness of their expectations throughout the day. Being able to have true visual representations of items used throughout their day will greatly improve their ability to communicate and have their needs met.
My Project
My students need an HP printer and color and black ink to create visual communication book systems and schedules. My students are in need of the printer and inks to help print photo pictured schedules as well as photo pictured representations of the items and tasks they may need during their day. Many of my speech and language impaired students experience frustration because their are unable to express thoughts and ideas in a way that can be understood by staff and peers. When that student wants to go to the bathroom he/she will be able to bring me an actual picture of the bathroom door rather than a picture of a sink or toilet that really does not mean anything to them or refer to their experience. Using simple, line-drawn pictures does not often help them because to these students it simply does not look like the item about which they are trying to communicate. With these items, each activity of the day can be printed and posted with the actual photos taken from a digital camera.
Your donation will make it so easy for our children to print pictures taken of the actual items they will use in a picture exchange format.
We will then have pictures of the block center or the dollhouse, etc. as students communicate their choices throughout the day. Your support will help these awesome children communicate with others.
