Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students range in age from kinder through 4th grade. They are students with learning disabilities who struggle with reading, number sense, and executive functioning skills.
They are also inquisitive, energetic and enjoy learning through technology, hands-on activities, and interacting with each other.
They are still learning about their strengths and how much they can grow.
We are part of a larger urban elementary school system in high poverty/low income area where 100% of students receive a free breakfast and lunch. In our school, over 73% of the student population identify as Hispanic.
My Project
Our school will have many changes in our student body this year. These changes may bring out some fears that some children would not have usually had. The materials in this project will support not only the academic but social growth in my students.
I'd like to provide some materials that assist me in providing not only academic learning but will support students in being able to connect to each other through fun and a common culture.
My students will identify with the characters in the stories when they read how the children in the books act out the super-strengths of the Mexican luchador/as to 'save the day.' Students will practice phonics skills while building positive relationships with each other with the Pop games. Finally, the organizational and everyday materials will support our routines and structures building familiar patterns on which students can rely and feel confident in executing. Providing these items will create the common ground on which our new student body can grow this coming year.
