My Students

My students are as colorful and diverse as the artwork that they make in my classes. Many of my students come from homes where both parents work, in many cases more than one job, and many of the kids are employed to assist in the financial security of the family. Students in my classes become a close-knit family of sorts, and relationships formed in class often lead to true and lasting friendships. My students are "my kids", and they know this. Even when they have been caught doing something wrong, many will come to me to talk about their bad decisions and how they know that I must be disappointed in them. Together, we work to make my room a safe and open space for all students to learn, push themselves, and try new things without fear so that the teens I see become risk-takers of the best variety!

My Project

Any sculpture unit is always a big hit, but as any art teacher will tell you, when you break out the clay, no matter the age... kids tune in!!

This year has been a challenge, and second semester is already shaping up to be yet another unique experience!

So many of my students basically lost middle school (a large portion of my roster are grade 9 students), and keeping their attention is proving a daunting task. I keep trying to make my units educational, enriching, and entertaining. So far, all is going well, but I am certain that having a full unit on sculpture where we use clay to a greater degree would guarantee the kids come to class and not skip.

Please help me make this opportunity a reality. Spring semester is already the biggest challenge a high school teacher faces. Add to the hormones and beautiful weather a lack of motivation and less than prepared kiddos (the effects of distance learning are still rearing their unattractive faces!); campus has more skippers than Carnival Cruises! I would love to entice my kids to class because they WANT to be there and not because they HAVE to.
