Creating Character Education with a Love of Literacy
My students need a classroom set of Gifted Hands: The Ben Carson Story to connect with and understand the value of hard work, perseverance, and overcoming obstacles.
Many of my students come from households that have not yet discovered the joy of reading. Many are unaware of the diverse perspectives surrounding them. My students need a classroom set of Gifted Hands: The Ben Carson Story. I hope to inspire my students with this amazing story of perseverance and the overcoming obstacles.
My students need these books to explore the diverse world in which they live and be inspired by Ben Carson's amazing accomplishments.
Most of my students have supportive families and eagerly seek knowledge. However, we live in an area that is not as diverse as the world in which Ben Carson was raised. My students have not had the opportunity to face the extreme hardships faced by Carson. Yet, despite the lack of experience with diversity, these students can relate to Carson's struggles to learn, his desire to achieve his dreams, and the idea that it is possible to succeed in reaching their goals.
My Project
My students will use this inspiring true story to connect with nonfiction. They will learn about Ben Carson, the inner-city kid with poor grades and little motivation, who later became director of pediatric neurosurgery at Johns Hopkins University Hospital and is now running for the Republican nomination for president of the United States. This novel will motivate my students through Carson's true story of humility, decency, compassion, courage, and sensitivity.
Many of my students struggle with believing in themselves. My students can learn from Carson as he proves that it is possible to achieve the impossible and to excel in whatever they attempt. My students will be engaged in critical thinking activities that ask them to connect their experiences with the experience of Carson. Students will also have the opportunity to synthesize what they have learned in their writing and classroom discussions.
By providing a classroom set of this amazing piece of nonfiction, my students will feel a pride in themselves that extends beyond my classroom walls.
Though our town may be small and culturally bland, our students need to know the world is a much bigger place that deserves our attention, empathy and support. By providing these new novels, Carson will speak to these youth through his life experiences.
