Ms. J. from VA is requesting professional development through DonorsChoose, the most trusted classroom funding site for teachers.
I need to attend the Breathe For Change professional development in order to become a Yoga and Mindfulness trained special educator.
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
I work at a culturally and linguistically diverse elementary school. We serve over 750 and children. Many have experienced trauma, poverty, food & housing insecurity, as well as associated learning needs and disabilities. As an educator I am working to become an initiator instead of a "responder" to the needs and demands of our most vulnerable students.
Students often come to my classroom with needs related to anger, anxiety, depression, or trauma.
Over the years I have worked to create a space in whatever building or position I'm in to help my students find calm and the ability to successful return to their learning environments. When my students have learned to regulate themselves and identify their needs they've had great wins. The children we serve need educators trained to usher them into the next century where mindfulness, self determination, and perseverance will be key!
The Breathe For Change professional development will improve my instruction by training me in how to create calm within myself, my classroom, and ultimately my students. When students are fully present and ready to learn there is an increase in the actual instruction that is taking place. But so many learners struggle to responsibly and safely express their needs or to release their anxieties.
This training will teach me how to create spaces throughout our school for learners to de-escalate and regain calm.
And research has shown that once disturbances and negative behaviors are reduced student performance soars. The Breath For Change program will help me to develop researched based and actionable steps to implement each day. And as a change agent I can then share this knowledge will my colleagues and school community. We can create safe spaces for children to whole-heartedly learn and grow.
