Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students attend a Title I campus located in an overall Title I district. Many of my students do not have the opportunity to go to Pre-K. As our campus does not have a program and they would have to attend another school. These programs at other campuses fill up very quickly.
Many of our students were impacted by Hurricane Harvey this past August/September 2017, and have had their homes and lives altered in unforeseeable ways.
We are hopeful that our kiddos will not have to have the same kindergarten experience that our students last year did. However, if we do, we know they are resilient and will still have a safe place to come to at school.
Overall, we are an amazing classroom family, and use our growth mindset to strive to be the best we can be.
My Project
Scholastic book orders are a great way to establish an at home library for young readers due to their quality books with reasonable prices. While I offer these book orders throughout the year and during our Christmas time book exchange, I often only receive participation from the same parents.
Children need to be exposed to books not just at school, but at home too.
The books that students check out from the library are not always on their level, and sometimes no one is available to read it to them. These Scholastic Book Club free book coupons give me a great deal to get my students quality books that they can take home, keep at home, and identify words in. It allows me to reach these students who are not ordering from the book orders for many reasons. The books I am able to gift them may be the only books they have access to at home, especially during the summer months when they are stuck in the house and often experience the "summer slide" of regressing in their reading level.
I gift books to my students at Christmas time and at the end of the year. The coupons would allow me to provide books to them more often, and gift them books on their birthday. These coupons can also be used to build up our classroom library whenever there is a book we do not have, or there is a good deal on it.
All students can read if given the right tools. My students are readers on their way to being leaders - one book at a time.
