This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students are English language learners. All of them speak Spanish as their first language, and now they are learning English. Many of them are also classified as Special Education students. Most of them are struggling readers, and they come from poor families, so they don't have many (or sometimes any) books at home.

My school is an alternative school, so the students struggle in many, if not all, of their academic classes.

They need access to high-interest books at a low readability level so they can improve their reading skills in particular and their English language skills more generally.

My Project

My school is planning a parent night, and we especially want to target the parents of my ELL students. At this parent night, we want to focus on encouraging reading in the home. We know from research that this will help improve our ELL students' test scores as well as their English language skills. Vocabulary is learned more through reading than through any other method. However, since most of our students come from poor backgrounds, they don't have books at home. We want to provide books at our parent night that the students and parents can take home to read and keep. We are particularly looking for books that are appealing to at-risk high school students and are relatively short so the students won't be overwhelmed by the length. We also want books that are written at a fairly low reading level so they will be accessible to our ELL students and help them improve their skills and vocabulary.

Handing out these books at our parent night will then empower the parents.

They will have books they can hand directly to their adolescent so they can encourage their student to read at home. They will then know what their child is reading and hopefully can even further encourage reading by talking about the books. As children see their parents showing interest in their reading, this will further support reading in and outside of school. Help us make this a reality and build small libraries in our students' homes!
