My students need a class set of Novels in Spanish to carry out our novel study and books in Spanish to read freely, in order to acquire more vocabulary.
I have just concluded my eighth year of teaching and am already excited for year nine, beginning this August. Despite having several years of teaching under my belt already, I am always looking to improve on my students' acquisition of Spanish. I have previously taught Spanish I, II, and III in the DC area and for the last three years have been teaching Spanish II in Charlottesville, Virginia. My ultimate goal for my seventh and eighth grade students is to become fluent in Spanish. I do, however, realize that Spanish II is a stepping stone en route to this ultimate goal. While I aim to create an immersive environment by instructing in Spanish, students need to develop all four communicative skills; listening, reading, writing, and speaking. For this reason, students need to read more in the target language in order to not only be exposed to more vocabulary, but also to see their vocabulary in context, rather than to learn their terms in isolation. Even students in only their second year of learning Spanish can benefit from reading extensively in the target language. With access to books in Spanish, students will be well on their way to becoming Bilingual!
My Project
In our Spanish II, class we will be working to become more fluent through reading in Spanish. These books will help students to learn Spanish through reading in the target language, and simultaneously help students to exponentially increase their vocabulary! If we have a class-set of novels, students can help each other to better understand the main ideas of their readings. The novel "Fiesta fatal" is appropriately leveled for my students and will help to give them more confidence in reading in Spanish.
While my students have access to shorter readings in their textbooks, having short novels in Spanish will help students to become more bilingual readers.
