Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Art is not just numbers and signs, it has a life that I am trying to teach my students.
I want to incorporate art into my math class to give my students a chance to be creative with their equations.
Everyone knows 2+2 is 4 but how can you make that with art? How can you prove it to someone?
Algebra is usually a high school class, but my students are still in middle school, and learning these advanced concepts.
No matter how much I can teach a student they will not learn unless they can master it themselves. Using art, students will be able to see algebra clearly through the problems.
My Project
Having materials to create posters and comment on each other's using Post-it notes during a gallery walk will enable my students to think outside the worksheets. I chose the materials because they would help create unique ways to solve boring problems. Students will be able to choose their medium pencil, marker, poster or paper or simply their brain. Imagine solving a liner equation bending pipe cleaners to give your solution.
I want the students to be able to go up to the board and help their classmates solve problems in their own words rather than mine. It creates a more intrinsic way of thinking rather than me forcing grades and homework.
Having different materials at their finger tips, students will learn that anything is possible and can be created when logic and creative thinking blend together.
It will be great to have random materials on hand to encourage my students to think more like an artist.
