Second-grade is filled with magic, and our class knows no limits. We are always looking for ways to grow our "magic" by helping others and growing our brains. My students are diverse learners in different stages of development in our community that is on the outskirts of the city in an almost rural setting. They represent a variety of cultures, beliefs, and socioeconomic backgrounds. Some are second language learners. Over 50% of the students in my school qualify for free or reduced-price lunch.
My students are excited to come to school every day to be a part of our classroom family.
My students may not have varied experiences outside of school, so any opportunity to infuse culture, history, or a glimpse into the future helps them to be ready for the world they are shaping.
Our school family provides safety and love for all unconditionally. We practice kindness and how each person matters and can contribute important work every day. My students have found that when working as a team, great things can happen. Together, everyone achieves more! They have discovered that working together can level the learning field for all. Many minds make great things happen.
My Project
Growing up is a glorious thing. You get to have new experiences all the time! You are always seeing something for the first time. This joy and wonder is indescribable and can fill a teacher's heart to overflowing watching children live through each of these moments.
What do you do when they experience unbelievable heartache and their tiny souls don't know how to share what they are going through?
You turn to art. Art allows students to express themselves in ways only they know how. They will select the colors to project the feelings they want or cut the paper just so. Many times, they want to make something to give to someone else filling up their hearts and kindness buckets all in one swoop.
This projects brings our classroom a replenishment of some supplies that were used to heal hearts, to fill boxes with items that have become lost and some new books to help us find a way to talk about our feelings.
Growing up is a part of life that when filled with love, compassion, hope, art and music can give us strength when we need it the most.
