My students need pedometers to use throughout the school day, soccer balls, jump ropes, and frisbees to use outdoors, yoga balls, and an iPad to access different activities.
I love and appreciate the diversity at our school. Not only is our school culturally diverse, but within my classroom the kids have different experiences with exercise and nutrition.
Some children play sports during the week and have homemade, healthy lunches and snacks provided each day.
Others do not get regular exercise and are not expected to try new, healthy foods. Some kids come to school hungry and others spend too much time in front of a screen.
When children are active throughout the day they are better able to focus and they are more calm. The benefits of exercise are endless and I am excited at the possibility of being able to provide more information, motivation, and activities throughout the year to support a healthy lifestyle in my classroom.
My Project
Toward the end of the last school year, I started wearing a Fitbit and my class was very interested in it. They helped me set goals for myself each day and encouraged me to meet those goals. They started going home and asking their parents if they could have Fitbits of their own. Right away, I knew that if each student had a pedometer that they could wear throughout the day, it would motivate all of us to move more and be more aware of our activity.
Kindergarteners need to move a lot throughout the day.
Exercise helps them focus during class and manage their stress. Last year I incorporated more exercise during the day that I ever have before. I learned about some amazing resources out there such as "GoNoodle" that my students loved. An iPad will allow students to have more frequent access to programs they love such as GoNoodle as well as some of their favorite dance videos. They are always requesting different videos to dance to throughout the day.
We have a large field in the center of our track and as I walk the track with my class, I think about using that space to play games and work on motor skills, to have fun, and experience healthy choices. My students told me that they don't get to go on the field during P.E. very often and asked if we could play out there sometimes. I am asking for frisbees, soccer balls, and jump-ropes to use in that space.
Using yoga balls as seats in my classroom will help support kids who need to move a little more to be able to focus. Having these supplies will ensure that my students are active for at least 60 minutes per day.
