My Students
As a teacher in a low-income/high poverty school district, my students are faced with several challenges both in and out of the classroom. Despite the many challenges they face, I am looking to keep things simple and provide my students with creative and meaningful learning experiences.
My students are creative, smart and very busy.
They like to move, they love to hear stories, read and love lots of attention. Many of them are being raised in single-parent households and all receive a free breakfast and lunch based on their socioeconomic status. These things may prevent them from getting ahead early in life and may not provide them with the life experiences many of us see as "typical."
From the minute they walk in the door of my classroom, I focus on their potential and growth. I may not be able to control their home lives, however, I can certainly control their experience during the school day. By doing this in a creative and positive way, I am hoping to inspire even our littlest learners to continue on a path of academic success.
My Project
We will use the Cricut in our classroom to create anchor charts. An anchor chart is a chart used as part of a lesson. It gives the students a visual reminder of what was learned during a lesson. In my classroom, we keep anchor charts posted around the room while we are working on a skill or concept. This allows the students to refer back to the chart at any time to get that reminder of what they learned.
An interactive anchor chart allows the students to take part in the creation or application of the anchor chart.
This interactiveness builds a sense of ownership in the students and makes the chart that much more meaningful. My students will have hands-on memory tools on which to anchor their learning.
