For many students, math is worse than going to the dentist. This is especially true for students that are years behind in mathematics. However, learning math provides students with a skill set that will be helpful with gaining a quality job. Help us change the equation today!
My high school is an urban high school with around 85 percent from economically disadvantaged backgrounds.
While most of my students are still children, they are facing adult circumstances. They often have to take care of their own family and work to put food on the table. Yet, they come to school everyday with a desire to graduate from high school and eventually attain meaningful employment. Some students are becoming active contributors to the school culture whether it be through participating in the show choir, playing football or aspiring to be in the military. By improving math skills, we can open even more opportunities for my students.
My Project
I enjoy coming up with projects, graphic organizers and guided notes to make math more relevant for my students. However, my students need to organize their new found knowledge and their mathematical creations. I have decided to have my students create interactive notebooks where they can keep their notes, mathematical projects and even reflect on their experiences learning math. I need binders to help my students make interactive notebooks. At the minimum, an interactive notebook will help my students organize their knowledge and serve as an active resource towards becoming productive students. My dream would be that my students hold on to their notebooks and think about how much they learned years from now.
To increase student engagement and the ability to assess my students' understanding, I would also like to have whiteboards.
Mathematics has not been easy for many of my students.
Many of my students come in to my Geometry and Algebra courses multiple grade levels behind. Yet, my students deserve the right to having a relevant and interesting experience in their math course. As a teacher, I see the need to amp up my students' engagement in learning math and provide them with the resources they need to become organized, successful students. Hopefully, in the process my students can begin to enjoy math.
