Creating an Inspiring Home for My Students

My students need a comfortable reading rug, floor lamps, plants, and inspiring stamps and posters.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I teach 10th grade English at a school where 100% of the students receive free lunch. This is a very special international studies public charter school, which is a school of choice for these students. Every student who graduates from our school will have met the A-G requirements to enter a UC or CSU school. For many of these students, they will be the first generation in their families to attend college.

I am a brand new teacher, and when I finished my teaching credential this past June, I was thrilled to find a job in a high poverty area where I can really make a difference. In this community, my students can choose "la vida loca" (the crazy life) of the gang world, or the better life that a college prep education offers. I want my classroom to be a sanctuary from the dangerous streets, where my students can learn and grow, taking advantage of the full opportunity of a good education. As the year has progressed, I have done by best to create this environment with second hand donations, creative artwork, and some small purchases, but the salary of a first year teacher is not very large, and my student loans are just coming due, so I have not been able to do much. Even just adding a second hand sofa in the back of my room has started to turn the classroom into a home where the students choose to come early and stay late, studying vocabulary words or just relaxing.

There is a senior history teacher at our school who has truly created a comfortable home in his classroom with soft lighting and elegant furniture. Students flock to his classroom during breaks, and stay after school to work on projects. I want to add just a few of those similar touches, as well as some inspiring and helpful decorations, to make my classroom a place where students feel at home, learning and discovering. To do this, I need a couple of lamps (so we can turn off those mean florescent overhead lights sometimes), a rug for my "reading corner," some plants to bring in the outside world (my classroom has no windows), some posters with key information about reading and writing skills, and some inspirational stamps for their papers.

While a comfortable classroom is not an absolute necessity, by creating this atmosphere for my students, you will encourage and inspire them, reminding them that learning is a joyous lifestyle, not a chore.
