It is important to create classroom environments that validate the natural diversity of our students, provide opportunities for students to see themselves represented in our curriculum, and support everyone to be motivated and enthusiastic learners. My students are highly diverse third graders. Lake View Community School student demographics are: 74% low-income, 42% English Language Learners (they speak another language other than English at home), 19% are in special education, and 21% are highly mobile or homeless. They are resilient children and eager, high energy, and curious learners despite the many challenges they face outside of school.
I want to create an inclusive classroom environment that embraces the different learning styles and diverse cultural backgrounds of my students.
Differentiated seating, fidgets, and books will celebrate where we come from and how we learn, and will support everyone to be their best in our classroom.
My Project
It is crucial for all students to have the tools they need to support their learning style and also have some perspective and understanding of different cultures in order to build relationships in our classroom. The differentiated seating and fidgets will provide the necessary supports for students to be able to move their bodies safely and appropriately, self regulate, and focus on instruction. They will be especially helpful when we work in small groups because not all students work well at a desk or table. The culturally diverse, student reflected books will support an inclusive environment as students see themselves in the texts we are reading and feel a deep sense of belonging, community, mutual understanding, and respect in our classroom.
These materials will support different learning styles, build confidence, and increase student engagement in learning.
As a first year teacher, I am working to build an inclusive classroom environment that supports the diverse sensory needs and validates the rich cultural backgrounds of all of my students. Your donation will contribute to the creation of a classroom space that will meet the needs of kinesthetic learners and feel safe, welcomed, and engaged in learning.
