This year I began doing STEM lab with our 4th and 5th grade students. They really enjoyed the free exploration of the materials. We have decided that next year we want to create a place for all our students to have the opportunity to create something without always being told what they need.
Most of the students in my school come from low income families.
These children come to school with all kinds of life challenges including not having the opportunity to be creative at home. Our school is located in a good neighborhood but most of our students do not live around the school.
My Project
In our new STEM lab- Imagination Station students will be given a task to solve. It may be figure out what sinks or floats, build towers to withstand a wrecking ball, create a habitat for an animal to live in, build something helpful out of recycled materials and more. On some days they will get to just explore what else is in the room and make new creations. With the materials I am asking for they will be able to decide between lots of different activities.
By having these Lego's and K'NEX, students will be able to explore things they may have never seen.
They will be able to use their imagination. By doing lessons for STEM students will be getting real-world life experiences that will help them for the rest of their lives.
