Creating an Energetic and Comfortable Classroom for Middle Schoolers
My students need materials that they will use for dialogic discussion, as well as for showcasing their own ideas (chart paper, Post-it notes, chalk board). I have also included highly engaging books for my library.
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
Do you remember being in middle school? Do you remember the anticipation of the first day, the excitement, as well as the anxiety that often times comes with leaving the elementary classroom and beginning the journey into secondary education? My students are starting this new chapter of their lives this year, and they are eager and nervous.
Over 90% of my students come from low income households, however this should not be reason for them to be held back in my classroom.
My students are beginning their journey of secondary education this year as they enter 6th grade, and they are excited and hopeful about this new chapter of their lives. Sixth graders are so special because they are full of energy and enthusiasm. I want to make sure I have the materials necessary to keep that spirit alive and ensure a positive and productive climate for my awesome students.
My Project
I will be using these materials to create a comfortable and engaging space for my incoming middle schoolers. I want to have enough pencils and notebooks so that no student has to come to class worried about not having materials. I have also added materials to make their learning experience interactive - a chalk board with colorful chalk where students can show off what they are reading during independent reading time, and see what I am reading in my own time as well. I also have included several packs of chart paper, markers, and Post-it notes that students will use to show their ideas to their peers. I have also included several books that I believe my students will find highly engaging in order to foster a love of reading and to provide books they will enjoy for their independent reading. Finally, I am requesting an air diffuser in order to ensure my classroom is a space that smells fresh and clean!
As a first year teacher, I have a very small collection of learning materials.
