Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Have you ever had to read a book in an uncomfortable chair? As an adult it is not very ideal, but think about having to read for sustained periods of time when you are in the 4th-6th grades and have a learning disability. It would make it very difficult to maintain your focus.
I have a fabulous class full of students that have the desire and motivation to learn even though they have had to face adversity.
They are in a self-contained Special Day Class (SDC) for students with mild to moderate learning disabilities and are in the 4th-6th grades. Over half of my students have been diagnosed with ADHD and have a difficult time maintaining focus and sitting in regular school chairs.
All of my students are reading at least 2 grades below their grade level, but they put in their best effort everyday to try and change this. It is a very diverse classroom filled with students from many different backgrounds - Hmong, Hispanic, and African-American just to name a few. Also, 100% of the students at our school are eligible for free breakfast and lunch.
My Project
These resources will provide my students with a warm, calming, comfortable environment to foster opportunities for learning. I want them to have a positive experience when they are reading, and this not only includes having great books to read, but also someplace comfortable to sit. Just because they are reading in a classroom, does not mean they should have to sit in uncomfortable chairs, and many of my students are just not physically able to do so. They need to have the desire and motivation to read in order for them to become lifelong readers and these chairs will help them to get there.
I currently only have 2 comfortable chairs in my room, and eight students. The use of these chairs are on a rotation system, but I have found the students who get the privilege of sitting in these particular chairs are able to maintain their focus for longer periods of time. I want to provide this opportunity to all of the students in my class.
I am requesting 5 bean-bag chairs and 2 ball chairs designed for students with ADHD to help maintain their focus.
Donations to this project will allow all of my students to sit in a fun, comfortable chair while they are reading or writing independently. I believe this will leave a lasting impression on them because they will be able to relate their reading experience to a fun, calm, comfortable situation.
