I love my school - and the hour-long commute, but during a pandemic, it has made me feel oceans apart from my students. At this time not all students have the following: electricity, food, Wifi, Chromebooks, or other materials essential for learning from home.
Remote or Distance Learning has presented challenges for our families around equity and access.
16 out of 20 of my families continue to work during this time making outside care providers the primary care during these school days. My students are were once offered 90 minutes daily of movement and physical education and are now hunched over Chromebooks for 4 or more hours with direct academic instruction being delivered online. Many of my students have access to technology but are missing the adult to support their work online.
The social-emotional support provided in school between Social Workers, paraprofessionals, and teachers all working to support a myriad of needs. With the desire to support not just their academic needs, but all support the emotional well being of students without - being with students - has presented unique challenges that my students and I face together.
Yoga is an integral part of our school day. Normally students spend anywhere from 15-30 minutes on a yoga mat with Jaime from Cosmic Kids Yoga. Unfurled yoga mats and water bottles typically speckle our little classhome for part of the day because we know the importance of connecting mind and body on focus and mental wellness.
As students begin to work remotely, this is a tremendous loss: Our goal is simple, to provide EVERY student in our classhome with their own yoga mat to use at home.
Every student will receive a yoga mat for practice at home, along with one yoga book to support student and family practice. This work is EXCEPTIONALLY important to me as an educator as we know the mental wellness of our families is at stake as we continue with remote learning and many families out of work. These stressors contribute in ways we have yet to see and this project will hopefully be there to support them all.
