My students need items such as a megaspinner to assist children with vestibular orientation. Most of our students require materials that we do not have access to for them to be successful in school.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
In our Academics for Life class, we have 3rd, 4th, 5th and 6th graders. We have students with Autism, Down Syndrome, Cerebral Palsy, Seizure disorders, ADHD, and Intellectual Disabilities.
Many of these students lost everything due to Hurricane Harvey.
This has greatly effected each of them. Most of the families in our district fall into the low socio-economic status, so we are considered a Title 1 district. This can make it hard for our students some days. If a student comes to school upset because he didn't sleep well, or he's hungry, then we need to help him get back on track. We love our students, and we want them to love learning. All of this combined with their disabilities makes it extremely hard to focus on learning.
They are eager to learn and want to be able to contribute their knowledge to the lesson. We love seeing how much they enjoy participating in the different subjects that we teach. It's amazing finding out how much they know about a particular subject and how happy they are to share that knowledge.
My Project
Occupational therapy practices, as a whole, have revealed that alternative seating such as the use of a therapy ball can reduce disruptive behavior and increase production in students with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (Schilling, Washington, Billingsly, & Deitz, 2003). Examining the use of alternative seating in the classroom may help to develop strategies for all students, with and without special needs, to focus better and be more productive in the classroom.
Students’ sensory needs must be met before learning can take place.
Hurricane Harvey has effected each of these students ability to self regulate their sensory needs. With these items we would have the ability to help regulate the sensory needs of our students.
Sitting for long periods of time may cause students to lose focus. For alternative seating, we would like to incorporate are bean bag chairs, lap desks, and different forms of therapy balls. Lap desks allow the student to relax on the floor while still being able to work; fidgets allow the student to use excess energy while quietly working at his desk. The therapy swing and body sock is for the student with Autism who needs deep tissue pressure.
We are confident that the different seating options and fidgets will allow our students to channel their energy so they can more easily retain the knowledge being provided.
