Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Spanish. Vietnamese. Khmer. Mien. Farsi. Karen. My students linguistic diversity is rivaled only by their variety of academic levels. Although the vast majority of students are reading below grade level, they all seek to leave third grade prepared to enter fourth grade at, or above, their peers.
My students are resilient and eager learners.
They arrive with empty backpacks on the first day of school, devoid of any school supplies, but filled with an excitement for new ideas. They are collaborative learners- any materials are readily shared, any strategies they learn are quickly taught to their neighbors. My students are scholars, coaches, and friends.
Our school is located in an incredibly diverse part of an incredibly diverse city. My students collectively speak six languages, many will be the first in their families to go to college, and some will even be the first to complete elementary school. What they all have in common is a strong desire to learn, and express themselves.
My Project
My students are eight year-olds to be sure- their excitement for learning is most plainly seen in impromptu jumping jacks to recall multiplication facts, collages to learn division, and reading to explore their own experiences. In order to do so, we need a library that reflects the diversity of their identities, as well as their present reading abilities. The books were deliberately selected at a variety of levels. Our present library caters to where a third grader should be. It is a fantastic playground of challenges that inspires students, but is presently out of reach for many. I hope that these books will infuse a worthy dose of diverse narratives, and social emotional learning, that will inspire my students to continue to grow.
In addition to books, my classroom lacks the infrastructure needed to be a supportive and open reading space. To create a friendlier and more welcoming environment, I am seeking bean bags for student chairs, and colorful bins to organize new books.
These new books will help create a selection diverse enough to match my students' varied experiences.
In creating a library that is welcoming and affirming, it will increase their investment and broaden their chances of finishing third grade prepared not only for fourth grade, but the educational challenges that remain ahead.
