Help me give my students a trauma sensitive classroom environment filled with 1 Cozy Cove/Safe Spot, calming sensory items, stories and visuals that makes them feel safe, respected, and meets their social and emotional needs.
As an early childhood/special education teacher in a low-income/high poverty/Title 1 school, my students are faced with several challenges, including trauma, both in and out of the classroom. Yet, my young students come to preschool eager to learn and explore their world every day.
Within my diverse classroom of young learners, I am blessed to teach English Language Learners, children with special needs, academically high, average and low learners and children with very limited life experiences outside of the impoverished school neighborhoods where they live.
My Project
These materials will help me create a more trauma sensitive classroom environment. By adding a safe spot/cozy cube, children will know there is a place they can go to think, calm and regroup their feelings. Over time, my sensory items and visuals have been broken by strong emotions. These new items will fill my need for new sensory and visuals materials.
Poverty, non-traditional family structures, crime, food and shelter are just some of the trauma my young children experience everyday.
Please support my classroom by funding these items as I strive to understand and create a more trauma sensitive classroom environment, and continue to integrate best practices, along already existing initiatives, discipline procedures, and MTSS process.
